Jean-Michel Manson, P!nk and other updates

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

This month saw Marilyn Manson play with fingertip lasers under a sea of smoke at Brixton Academy, a grand circus show by P!NK on her Funhouse tour at the O2 Arena, Mars Volta in great shape but with a ridiculous (release) form (cf previous post), a press conference with Rihanna announcing her UK arena tour 2010 and last night The Raveonettes supported at Islington Academy by ex- Hope Of The States, The Nothwestern. A near miss with Them Crooked Vultures, the supergroup with Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones and Josh Homme, which I refused to shoot eventually due to a non negotiable ridiculous form, again, third time this month. The release was word for word the same as for Mars Volta, grabbing rights throughout the Universe and etc.

Doolittle (in the dark) and some Albert Hall goodness

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

I was very excited to go and shoot The Pixies, definitely one of my favourite bands or at least it was one of my most listened through my uni years. And what else they were in town to play their best album Doolittle! So it was a bit of a letdown that the first four songs, four B-sides – the ones we could photograph (or half of them in fact) – were played in the dark with just some backlight at some point. And as soon as we had to leave the pit the Pixies started their anthem Debaser and the lighting became fantastic, but we had no chance to be able to capture it! Why on earth would anyone want their band to be only photographed in the worst conditions considering they were actually using such awesome lighting later in the show?? These are the absurdities we sometimes find in this. Fine that we can only photograph a few songs in a show but give us something to photograph! Oh well..

Also this week I had the pleasure to be photographing twice at the Royal Albert Hall. Whatever the conditions are I always love to be there, if only to be inside this building and look around and appreciate the beauty of that place. Friday was Maximo Park (can’t find how to make these two dots over the i…) supported by Kitty Daisy and Lewis. I can’t believe Paul Smith didn’t perform his trademark jump (any photographer shooing this band live is like a hunter waiting for the jump to happen at the right time and light ;) ). But nice show and nice setting in any case.

Happy 2008, before starting posting the new shots I’ll try to post a few sets from 2007 that I didn’t have time to put online. I start with The Damned at the London Forum, for the Texas Chainsaw Travelling Horror Picture Show.
